Food Intolerance Blood Test – Is it worthwhile?

On this page, we tell you everything you need to know about the food intolerance blood test, with the aim of helping you to work out whether it is worthwhile taking one.

What is involved in a non-allergic food hypersensitivity blood test?

Like any other blood test, the process is simple. You simply have to go to your doctor’s office and have a sample of your blood drawn.

With this type of test, you do not have to do any preparation. You can eat breakfast before giving your blood sample.

The drawn blood is then sent away to be tested in a laboratory. It is important to make sure that the laboratory that will be carrying out the examination of your blood is properly qualified to do so. Provided you go through your doctor’s office this should be the case.

When you are sensitive to certain foods your body reacts by producing high levels of IgG when you eat those foodstuffs. If you are allergic to a food, your body produces an antibody called IgE. Naturally, the laboratory will be testing your blood to see if you have elevated levels of icG in your blood.

Should I have a food intolerance blood test?

From what we know this blood test can be helpful, but only to a limited extent. All a positive result really tells you is that some or one of, the foods you are currently eating is causing an adverse reaction in your body.

Unfortunately, a food sensitivity blood test is not cheap. It usually costs several hundred dollars. You need to ask yourself if it really is worth paying all that money just to get your suspicions confirmed. For most people, it will not be.

The other issue we have with this type of test is that it is possible to produce a false negative. For example, if you have suspected that dairy products do not really agree with you, and have reduced the intake of these products it is logical to assume that the level of inflammation in your body will drop. In that situation, if you have the blood test it is highly likely to produce a negative result.

Where to get a food intolerance blood test done

However, if you do decide, even after reading these, that you should have a food intolerance blood test you need to be careful about where you get one done. You may see this sort of test offered at health fairs or in your local pharmacies. Our advice is not to have your food intolerance blood test done anywhere like that. You are far better off making an appointment with an allergist in your area and letting him or her conduct the test.

They have enough experience to interpret the results of the blood test accurately. It is also the best way to make sure that the test is done properly and under laboratory conditions.
