Coping with the Cost of Food Intolerance and Allergies
Anyone who suffers from food sensitivity will tell you that it is not much fun. It is very inconvenient and can make eating out and socialising quite tricky. However, that is not the only problem.
Managing the high cost of living with food intolerances
One of the biggest issues is the fact that living with sensitivity to foods costs money. This is because if you want to continue to enjoy a wide and varied diet you have to buy specialist food products.
One study in America estimated that the 20 million people who live there and suffer from some form of food allergy or intolerance spend an extra $500 million on food and supplements. That is a lot of extra cash to spend every year.
In many families, more than one person has some form of special dietary needs, which means even more expense. However, there are some ways to keep the costs down. Here are our top tips.
Cook your own food as much as possible
Our first tip is to cook your own meals as much as possible. There are some great allergy friendly recipe resources out there and a lot of them are free. In the future, I will put together a top 20 list of these free resources for you to use.

It turns out to be more fun than they realise as well as saving them money and helping them to eat a far healthier diet.
Of course, you can still buy ready-made allergen free products if you want to. If you are short on time, just try making your own low allergen bread and cakes. You can do it once a week, or even once a month and freeze some. Doing just this will save you a huge amount of money. Bread is something most people eat every day.

Failing that consider buying the generic versions of the drugs you need. Typically, branded drugs cost five or six times more than the generic type does, so it is always worth trying them.
A word of caution
