There is a growing body of researchers who believe that part of the reason more people are suffering from gluten intolerance and other food sensitivities is down, at least in part, to modern farming techniques. Many are pointing out that we now use far more chemicals, which means there are more trace chemicals in our food.

This could be why some people report that following an organic diet has helped them to tackle their gluten intolerance. Others say they feel better when eating gluten free organic products like the ones listed at the bottom of this page.

The theory is that rather than people being intolerant of the proteins in gluten laden products it is the left over pesticides that are causing the majority of the issues. It is early days when it comes to this research, but it is being seriously looked at and documentary makers are starting to take an interest in the subject.

In a documentary that was broadcast in 2017 Dr David Perlmutter, explained why common pesticides could be a potential issue for the human body. He started by explaining  the “Shikimate pathway” which is a metabolic process. The process involves the millions of bacteria that occupy us. When we eat food that has been treated with strong pesticides, that very important bacteria is susceptible to being adversely affected.

Anything that kills the bacteria in our gut has the potential to compromise important processes within the body. For example, people with poor gut bacteria can find it hard to absorb vitamins and minerals from food. This naturally, put the organs under stress and, in time, can lead to them not working properly. To most consumers this makes a lot of sense. The net result of which is the growing demand for chemical free foods. Something we see manifested in growing demand for organic food stuffs.

New technology to reduce reliance on pesticides

This consumer revolt is prompting growers to try to stay ahead of the game. Many are actively reducing their reliance on chemicals. Fortunately, there are some really viable non-chemical options being developed.

A great example of this is the Smart IoT Application Development (SIOTAD) framework. It takes technology from different fields and combines them to produce a single product that should help farmers to manage weeds without having to resort to chemical weedkillers. The system monitors crops to look for the early signs of weeds coming through. When weeds are detected the farmer can work out how much the yield will be affected and work out if spraying is really necessary. In many cases it will not be needed.

This is borne out by the fact that in early trials the level of chemical usage fell by 80%. For the farmer there are considerable savings to be made. Plus, consumers are more likely to want to eat food that is produced in this way. However, there is an upfront investment needed, which makes it highly unlikely that small farmers will be able to use these systems. However, they will be able to learn from the data and are likely to come up with simplified and, therefore, cheaper ways to do something similar.
